Flashback Friday! (Slick Rick-Teenage Love)
When asked about hip-hop ballads, most people will automatically think of the LL Cool J classic I Need Love off of his Bigger and Deffer album. Who didn’t love that song when it came out?
But right up there, I would have to say, is the overlooked Teenage Love by Slick Rick from 1988’s The Great Adventures of Slick. The beat was sick and his lyrics were on point. I love the part where he sings, “Do you know where you’re going to…” sampled from Mahogany. Who did that?! I think he was one of the firsts (if not the first) to mimic someone elses lyrics and singing style and not just sample their beat.
Anyway, the video is full of 80’s goodness like big-ass-Goldie-lookin’ fur coats, even bigger gold chains, and even a cameo by Big Daddy Kane.
